Deal Tri 5 Miler

Indie and Kofi raced this morning in the Deal Tri Junior race, 1000m along Deal seafront. Kofi's first race, and he ran along high-fiving almost all the marshalls! Indie won her second cup of the season, winning the Under 8 girl's category. I wasn't quite as speedy in my race, but happy to finish in 41 minutes (and without my current injury rearing it's ugly head). Chris spent the morning on the finish line timekeeping and a good time was had by all.

Deal Tri Duathlon Champs

Chris and I both raced at Fowlmead Country Park yesterday. It was a 2 lap run (4 miles approx), 8 lap bike (16miles) and 1 lap run (2 miles) format. Gorgeous morning for it, not as windy as usual but a bit of headwind during the bike laps. Chris came 5th overall, I came last although I was also runner up female in the strong field of 2! Meant I won a box of chocs though.

(I couldn't have possibly expected to have beaten the other female, Jill, she's off to the Half Ironman World Champs in Florida in a couple of weeks. I console myself that it would have only taken a puncture or bodily collapse for Jill, and I could have been club champ! hey, I can't expect to ever win by talent alone....)

India is 7!

It seems to have been a whole week of celebrations! On Thursday, Indie turned 7, and as she wished, she started Brownies on her birthday (she's been wanting to go to Debbie's brownie pack since she learnt to talk!). On Saturday, I took Indie and 5 of her friends from school out for the day. We went to see Nim's Island at the cinema in Ashford, then had a fish and chip picnic on the beach in Hythe, followed by ice creams on the seafront. The girls all had a super time and I was only marginally worn out when I dropped them all home after almost 7 hours!

Quicksand 15

We try and support this mad old race round the Thanet coastline every year, but wearing my sensible hat, I decided my legs needed a little more r&r after IMUK (although I enjoyed a 38 mile pedal Saturday morning in the sunshine). So Chris ran the Quicksand 15 on Sunday whilst the kids and I had a gorgeous morning on Broadstairs and Margate beaches in the sunshine, cheering the runners past.

Chris was in the top ten at the halfway point and top twenty on finishing in a very impressive time of 1hr58. It is 15 miles of sea, sand, cliffs, steps, pebbles and slippery rocks......about as far as you can get from road running! Chris and fellow Dealies Kev and Tim won the team trophy too. Nice one fast boys!

Back to School

Tomorrow I am starting something I thought I never would....another degree! Two not quite being enough, at the grand age of 35 I am embarking on no.3! I am now a student at Canterbury Christ Church University, studying for an MA in Social Work. It's a two year, full time (and that means full time, whatever happened to having a couple of hours lectures a day and getting legless in the union bar afterwards?). It's going to be a lot of work, but I am looking forward to it. I already have a new 22 year old friend doing the course, she can enlighten me on what to wear and what music is cool!

Right off to pack my satchel and polish my shoes........ xx

Cor Blimey - I'm an Ironman!

This is a long post, beware! It was all a bit ominous driving down to Dorset on Friday through the gales and lashing rain, pitching the tent at the Ironman camp site wasn't much fun either....not the greatest start to the weekend. Paul, Shannon and Mark were already at the camp site and me and the boys quickly walked over to the Ironman village by the castle to register. Mark and I went back later to the pasta party, and like the rest of the day, it all seemed a bit cold, wet and glum.

First night's kip in the tent was limited to 3 hours due to a mind full of ironman doubts and the airbed having a leak (the same happened Saturday night despite Chris mending it). I was hoping this run of bad luck with punctures wasn't going to be extended to my bike race!

Saturday afternoon saw Dom arrive, and then Simon, Dom and Tilly - all camping with us (crazy fools, the weather was shocking). Thanks for your support though, it meant alot even though I didn't get to see too much of you.

Got about 3 hours sleep Saturday night, flat airbed again, tent being battered by gales and rain and worries about oversleeping past my 4am get up (oversleeping - very funny)....so I began race day having had 6 hours sleep in 2 nights with strong winds blowing......funnily enough, not feeling too positive at this point!

Got to bike transition about 5.15am, got our tyres pumped and started getting into my westuit when Nikki and Dom told me through the fence that Chris was racing around trying to find me as I had left my timing chip in the tent!!! Said chip duly passed to me by a rather stressed looking Chris and I put it on my ankle before I could lose it again.

We were herded down to the lake at just gone 6am, still pitch dark, 1500 nervous looking athletes....being as tired as I was, I didn't feel overwhelmingly nervous, just had strong desire to lie down somewhere and pretend this wasn't all happening! As we neared the water Tim, Paul, Gary and Mark all wished me luck and then I was swimming out the start line - cold water!! Had to tread water for about 15 minutes whilst all the competitors got near the line and as daylight began to break, we were off. A very rough swim start, got kicked and punched and swum over, spent at least 5 minutes just trying to find enough clear water so I could at least begin my stroke. Swim was 2 laps of the lake and I tried to keep a good line to each end buoy. Very rough again at the buoys, got kicked so hard in the ribs that I felt quite winded. Strange moment at the turnaround for the last leg, looked up to breathe and saw Paul there bobbing by the buoy, so poked my head up and said "Hello Paul" and he said in comedy voice "Hello Chantal" and then off we swum into the washing machine of feet and fists. Glad to finally get hauled out of the water.

Made it through the hectic chaos of transition and was finally out on my bike.......after about 30 seconds, totally regretted not putting arm warmers on, as I was freezing and I stayed freezing until I saw Chris at the end of lap 2 when he chucked me his skinfit top. My feet stayed frozen until 8 hours later, I put my trainers on and started running. I can describe the bike as cold, windy, unrelentingly hilly and pretty bloody miserable. I felt really upset the whole of the first lap, almost on the verge of tears, sick of the cold and the wind and horribly daunted by the miles that lay ahead. Saw Mark and had a little chat (he later told me he thought I might quit). Made myself eat and drink, and although still very cold, cheered up abit as I started my second lap. That was probably my best 37 miles as the last lap felt very hard, the hills seemed to have got longer and steeper, the wind even stronger. My shoulder started to spasm and my back was oh so sore....I had to grit my teeth, not worry about how long it was taking to cover the distance and just keep pedalling to the end of the 112 miles. Just shy of 8 hours later, I got off my bike, so relieved as I knew my ironman was in the bag. As I said to Dom and Nikki as I ran past, I was going to make it!

I had no idea whether I would have any energy left for my run as that bike had really taken it out of me, but I set off at a steady plod and only walked when the hills really got to me (ran up most of them). The mile markers slowly went past, I kept saying to myself, run as far as you can, then you can walk. Past 13 miles, still felt ok, it was a nice feeling NOT being overtaken, I was just running past people the whole marathon. Felt a bit tired at miles 15/16 but got a new spurt of energy, speeded up (or it felt like I did!!) for the rest of it. I was still thinking, you can walk when you truly can't run any further, but that never happened. I was really enjoying the speactator support, didn't mind the hills or the 3 mile muddy off- road section.....and LOVING running past all these super fit looking blokes who were walking! I was truly enjoying the end of my ironman and it really helped compensate for the misery I had felt on the bike. I stopped at every feed station for flat coke and the odd salty pretzel, duly swallowed my gel on the hour and before I knew it, I was in the final section through Sherbourne town...I felt like I was flying (I know I was plodding really!)....I'd seen Gary, Mark and Paul during the 3 laps and I knew I was catching them.

I grabbed India and Kofi in the finish shute and over the line we went. I had finshed faster than I had dared hope and I was so pleased with my run, and that I had at least enjoyed a portion of the day. Gary and Paul were there both looking very green and grim. Chris, Dom and the kids headed back to the tents and Mark and I saw the last Dealie finish an hour or so later. The walk back to the campsite seemed very, very long, by the time I got to the tent, I didn't have the energy to go and shower so I spent a fitful night feeling very sore and grimey. Yuk!

Big thanks to Dom, Nikki, Shannon, Dominique, Simon, Tilly, Indie and Kofi for coming to watch and cheer us on. Extra big thanks and love to Chris who now knows what it feels like to be an Iron-widow! And for being my bike mechanic. Happy 10th wedding anniversary for tomorrow! xxx

Off to Ironman UK - Sherbourne, Dorset

Tomorrow we are driving down to Sherbourne in Dorset for Sunday's Ironman race, normally it'd be me and the kids supporting Chris, but this year I have the pleasure of the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run! Chris, Dom and the kids will be there cheering me on...

The weather is awful at the moment, very very windy, very wet and rainy....and you guessed it, we are camping in Sherbourne of course! We thought it couldn't possibly be bad weather two years in a row - wrong! The prospect of gale force head winds on the 112 mile hilly bike (which I was already going to struggle with) is not sitting too easily with me as you can imagine.

Since new year's day, I have run 510 miles, swum 100km and biked 1020 miles....sound alot? Well in ironman training terms, it isn't really especially the amount of biking I have done. But I have done as much as being a mum of little ones and circumstances have allowed. At times I have felt like I had taken on an impossible task and throwing in the towel, but being a stubborn cow, I kept at it. Chris has been incredibly supportive, urging me to train whenever possible, always ready to take over with the kids so I could train or race.

Who knows what adventures Sunday will bring, definitely alot of pain and hard work, just hoping the wind drops, my bike holds together and the hills aren't as bad as in my dreams! If I finish, I will be over the moon, the time cut off for completion is 17 hours which will be about 11pm Sunday night. You can follow my progress online on http://www.ironmanlive.com/
(look out for training pals and fellow Dealies, Paul McGeehan, Gary Winstanley, Mark Sayer, Tim Malpass and Ed Smith)

As a certain Mr Cross said, and I paraphrase, it takes alot to be brave enough to simply be on an ironman start line.....I'll be there.........wish me luck, I might need a bit!

2012 Olympic Flag Run

Yesterday I ran with other Dealies along the cliffs from Dover seafront to Deal pier (10 miles) carrying the 2012 Olympic flag and original torch from the 1948 GB Olympics. We started off in Dover in the pouring rain but finished in Deal in brilliant sunshine. The local MP and mayor then hoisted the flag. About 400 flags were raised all over the country yesterday to mark the countdown to London 2012.

Our friends from Malaysia come to Great Mongeham

Simon, Shilpa, Sid and Seb came to visit from KL in Malaysia. We had a great few days with them and Rocky who had come over from the Isle of Wight. We spent last Tuesday exploring the Romney Marsh on the R,H&D railway. The little trains took us for fish and chips at Dungeness and then the funfair at Dymchurch. Kids had a great day, so did we although Shilpa was a bit confused about the attractions of the nuclear power station!

Deal Tri Dinosaur 10km

Last Sunday, Indie ran for the second year in the kids 1500m race, running alongside Izzy who was running her first ever race. They looked so sweet finishing together.

Since Cath and Terry were staying with us for the weekend, Terry was roped into running the annual Deal Tri 10km with me. It was a very hot weekend and Sunday morning saw more blue skies and high temps, not a day for PB's. I set off a bit fast and almost vommed going up the big hill but hung in there. Saw quite a few runners collapsing, most likely due to the heat. Terry 'treated' Jason and I to some professional stretching afterwards, I think we both managed not to cry!

The Beaver

Travelled up to Belvoir Castle near Grantham on Friday evening, managed to pitch the tent in the castle grounds in the dry (the biggest miracle of the w/e considering the week of torrential rain that literally stopped as we drove into Belvoir). Dom had travelled down from Manchester and was waiting the in trees for us to arrive. We were soon joined by fellow Dealies Simon W, Dominique and their four girls.

Saturday saw Dom racing the LITTLE BEAVER, an olympic distance tri. We cheered her off on her swim, but due to race timings, she wasn't back before I then headed for my swim start for the BEAVER (2km swim, 85km bike, 20km run). The swim was round and up and down a muddy old puddle that you could stand up in. Spent 5 mins being swum over and being bashed into before settling into a decent swim stroke. Was out of the water in 35mins which I was well chuffed with (especially after my panic attack in Dover harbour a couple of weeks ago).

Then a long run up to the bike transition (and I mean long!), through sludgy grass and cowpats (real rural this race!). Out onto the bike where, of course, I immediately lost any advantage I had built on the swim. Felt ok apart from my usual rubbish struggle up any little hill on the course, and there was quite a long one that had to be tackled on all three laps, GOD I HATE HILLS!

Back to the castle and out onto the run, amusingly 3 laps of the castle grounds including three times to the top of the hill where the castle stands. Very funny, not....Felt rather sick by the last lap and my back was pretty seized up but finished with a PB for this distance so the effort was worth it. Dom had done really well in her race despite being undertrained and not feeling 100%, moreover she had enjoyed it which is really cool. Simon did great in his first attempt at this distance as not the easiest course to begin with....

Had a cool evening by the tents, you'd have thought the kids were in the most amazing 5* theme park/hotel complex, so happy were they climbing trees and weeing in the woods.

Bewl 15

Ran this off mainly off road undulating race yesterday around the edge of Bewl Water in East Sussex. Chris and my parents looked after the four kids, as Zoe racing too. Poured with rain for the last couple of miles, even the brass band at the finish line packed up early!

Left hip hurting more and more every long run/race, hope it holds out until 7th September......

Zoe 2.19.57 (her longest ever race!)

NSPCC Big Bike Ride

After a late night of boozing and embarassing dancing at a local friend's wedding (and that's just the kids!), this morning we cycled down to Walmer seafront to take part in the Big Bike Ride in aid of the NSPCC. The route was along the seafront cycle track and then onto the ancient highway towards Sandwich, pit stop at the pub for Pimms and return to Walmer Castle. 10 miles in total. Some of our local friends were also there with their kids, and about 100 people set off.

Unfortunately Indie was involved in a nasty crash with a woman coming the other way, and ended up underneath her and two bikes. The organisers managed to bandage her arm up and once she calmed down, she said she wanted to carry on, somewhat gingerly for a while.

After we finished, there was a cool barbeque on the beach. Indie cycled 15 miles in total including the ride there and home, not bad for a 6 year old. Kofi is now pretty confident on the tagalong bike too. Chris and I also did a 63 mile training ride on Friday so it's been a bit of a biking weekend really, might give my bum the day off tomorrow!

Stripes is an Ironman!

Hot off the press, our friend Andrew Smith (commonly known as Stripes, don't ask me why) has just finished his first Ironman in Nice, France. He did a fantastic time of 13hrs 40mins. This race includes a seriously hard (like, proper mountainous) bike leg so a brilliant acheivement. Must have been those couple of training rides with me that did it (joking of course!).

Congratulations Stripey!

North Downs 30km (and a kidney stone)

Meanwhile, Indie had a lovely day together back in Kent on Saturday and then on Sunday, Paul and I headed to Gravesend to compete in the Norths Downs 30km tough, hilly, hot, cross country run (sound familiar?). We were using this race as Ironman training and I had persuaded Paul to enter at the last minute.

It was a stunnning course, very up and down, some of the downs so steep it was hard to actually run......poppy fields, woodland sections. It was also probably the best marshalled and signed race I have ever run, full credit to the organisers. It was tough but I enjoyed most of it despite the heat leaving me very thirsty almost the whole race. I was downing two cups of drink every feed station, which then sloshed around in my stomach up and down the hills!

I was pleased with my finish time and for the first time ever I was first Deal Tri lady back!

Paul 3hrs 3mins
Chantal 3hrs 13 mins

But the story doesn't quite end there......shortly after setting out back down the M2, Paul started complaining of back pain and within a few minutes was writhing in absolute agony. He then threw up all over the hard shoulder of the M2 and I began to realise he was proper poorly. Eventually after another puke stop, I got him to Canterbury hospital where they got some pain relief into him pretty quick. Poor bloke, he looked terrible and was in ALOT of pain. It could be the race had dislodged the kidney stone.....anyway, he spent the night in hospital but hopefully they'll get him sorted today. Bet he's glad I persuaded him to do that race......

South Downs Marathon 2008

Chris and Kofi headed for Hampshire on Friday to stay with Ron and Jean and for Chris to compete in the South Downs Marathon again on Saturday morning.

This very hilly cross country marathon takes runners across and along the south downs from Arundel back to Petersfield. A pretty tough race by all accounts especially as it was also hot and sunny this year. Chris did really well for the second year in a row and came in at 3hrs 58mins.

Wet n' Windy Welsh Camping

The old Cardiff gang were meeting up again this weekend. We had planned a few nights camping on the Gower penninsula near Swansea in South Wales, exploring the beaches and admiring the beautiful scenery......as if life would be that straightforward.....

Chris, the kids and I set off on Friday at lunchtime, thinking we'd be clever and beat the bank holiday traffic, wrong, 6 hours later we arrived at Cath and Terry's in Bristol with a couple of grumpy kids and a hot dog. But that was soon forgotten as we had a lovely evening eating, drinking and catching up. On Saturday morning we then headed from Bristol to the Gower, thinking, gosh and golly, it's a bit windy.

Saturday night saw everyone safely arrived, with tents errected overlooking Oxwich Bay on the top of a (very exposed) hill. Our tent had already broken whilst putting it up, the winds were so strong and during the night, Cath and Terry's collapsed completely whilst more tent poles snapped under the strain. Then it started to rain as well. The noise of the wind alone meant sleep was impossible. Bleary eyed with damaged tents flapping the in the torrential rain (am I getting carried away?!), we made the decision to 'evacuate' - and we set off to Milford Haven in deepest West Wales to Sam and Matt's house. Fortunately they could accomodate us all (10 adults, 7 kids and 1 dog) and we all had a super time, eating, drinking and moaning about the British weather!

We stayed an extra night and headed back yesterday, thinking we'd be clever and beat the bank holiday traffic, yes, wrong again. Spent an hour or two in the company of the protesting truckers (fuel prices) and lots of police driving at 15 miles an hour down the M4. Still, not too bad a journey and I treated Chris to an extra big birthday latte from the motorway services.
